Accessibility
How we've built this site to be usable by as many people as possible, and how to tell us when it isn't.
What we've aimed for
This site is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. That is a standard rather than a certificate, and we would rather describe what we have actually done than claim compliance and leave it there.
What that means here
- Contrast. All text is checked against the background it actually sits on. Body text is never rendered in a faded grey — if you can see it, you should be able to read it.
- Keyboard. Every link, button, menu and form field can be reached and operated with a keyboard, with a visible focus indicator. There is a skip link to the main content at the top of each page.
- Structure. One main heading per page, headings in a logical order, and proper landmarks so screen readers can navigate the page rather than reading it front to back.
- Forms. Every field has a visible label attached to it, and required fields are marked in the field itself rather than only in colour.
- Images and diagrams. Meaningful images carry text descriptions of what they actually show. Decorative graphics are hidden from screen readers so they don't clutter the experience.
- Motion. The animated elements on this site respect the "reduce motion" setting in your operating system. Turn it on and they stop.
- Zoom and reflow. The site works at 400% zoom and on small screens without horizontal scrolling. Wide tables scroll within their own container rather than pushing the page sideways.
- No traps. No pop-ups, no interstitials, no auto-playing audio or video, no content that moves on its own outside the two subtle animations described above.
Known limitations
Coverage plots and technical diagrams are inherently visual. Each carries a text description of what it shows, but a description cannot fully substitute for reading a heatmap. If you need survey findings in an alternative format, tell us and we will provide them — that applies to reports we produce for clients as much as to this website.
